Joint Replacement in Portland, OR

Joint Replacement Portland OR

At Summit Orthopaedics, we offer joint replacement surgery for patients who have ongoing joint pain that cannot be managed with nonsurgical treatment options. For some patients, nonsurgical treatments like anti-inflammatory medications, injections, physical therapy, and walking supports may be sufficient, but for others, those treatments have not helped. Joint replacement surgery is the alternative surgical treatment for these patients suffering from severe joint pain, stiffness, limping, muscle weakness, limited motion, and swelling.

Causes of Joint Problems

The most common causes of joint problems are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other contributing factors that may weaken joints and lead to arthritis include:

  • Heredity
  • Joint development problems
  • Genetics
  • Repetitive injuries
  • Trauma to joint cartilage (the cushioning tissue at the end of the bones)

Obesity or being overweight doesn’t directly cause arthritis, but they can contribute to joint problems as excess weight puts more stress on joints, particularly weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees.

Benefits of Joint Replacement Surgery

Joint replacement surgery offers patients several life-changing benefits that can help:

  • Eliminate joint pain
  • Correct a deformity
  • Improve the patient’s mobility
  • Treat advanced arthritis

Summit Orthopaedics Addressing Your Joint Replacement Needs

Summit Orthopaedics can schedule a joint replacement procedure (hip or knee) for you at any one of a number of area hospitals convenient for you or at our Oregon Surgical Institute.

The primary goal of joint replacement procedures is to replace the damaged cartilage and any bone loss with a metal, plastic, or ceramic device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis can be attached to the bone with acrylic cement or it can be press-fit, which allows the bone to grow into the implant. These prostheses are designed to replicate the movement of healthy, normal joints.

Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery may be considered if nonsurgical treatments do not relieve hip pain. During this procedure, the arthritic portions of the hip are replaced with metal and plastic surfaces. This procedure has been extremely successful in relieving arthritis pain for the vast majority of patients and allows patients to maintain mobility for many years after the procedure.

Knee Replacement

Knee replacement surgery involves removing the damaged portions of the knee and replacing them with prosthetic components. The damaged bone is replaced with metal implants, and a medical-grade plastic spacer is inserted between the metal implants to allow the new knee to glide with movement.

Depending on the location and severity of knee arthritis, there are different surgical options available for knee replacement. At Summit Orthopaedics, Dr. Mirza has expertise in total knee replacement and partial knee replacement.
